Winter Home Maintenance Checklist

Winter is here, and though we haven’t seen our first snowfall yet, it’s coming. For most people, a home is one of the largest investments they’ll ever make in their lives and is one that is worth protecting. Winter can be the harshest season of the year, and it can do a lot of damage to your home. At Dragon Scale, we’ve been helping homeowners in Maryland with many different home projects for years and wanted to talk about a few things you should be sure to have on your home’s maintenance checklist.

Winter Home Maintenance Checklist

Change Your Furnace Filter

Your furnace is a crucial part of your home’s heating system, especially during the cold winter months. The filter on your furnace has a big job to do. It cleans every bit of air that comes through the furnace. You should inspect and clean off your filter at least once a year, and if your filter is too dirty, you may have to replace it. Failing to clean out or replace your furnace filter will lead to a decreased airflow from the furnace and could even lead to a fire.

Give Your Roof a Good Look Over

The roof on your home keeps the entirety of your home’s interior dry and protects you and your family from all of the harsh conditions outside. It’s always a good idea to inspect your roof before winter comes. Winter often brings ice and snow, which can weigh down your roof. If your roof has any structural issues, you’ll certainly want to find out about them before any snow falls.

Be Sure to Clean Out Your Gutters

Without gutters, water would pool up at all around your home. They are a critical part of your home’s infrastructure, but they can’t function properly if they’re clogged. Snow and ice will weigh down your gutters, and if they’re clogged with sticks and leaves, all of the weight could rip your gutters right off your house. Plus, when all that ice and snow melts, it needs to have a clear path for the water to drain.

Store or Bring in Outdoor Furniture or Cushions

Many people have furniture set up outdoors, but most people don’t use the furniture too much during the winter. Plus, all the snow and ice can cause damage to your furniture. We recommend you store anything you don’t want to have water damage. Any cushions should be brought inside, and anything metal should be stored, or it may rust.
