Challenges With Basement Flooring

Basement flooring is one of the trickiest in the house due to the basement being under ground on all or several sides. Being surrounded by dirt almost up to the ceiling makes basements cool, dark and humid. In addition, concrete is a porous material that can let through moisture from the soil. This is especially bad news if your home is in a low spot with a high water table. Another challenge with basement flooring is that the concrete slab is not always level, making for a tough surface to work with.

Basement Flooring Options

First of all, no matter what flooring materials you choose, they should be installed on a level sub-floor. This means you should either have the concrete slab leveled with self-leveling cement or install a floating floor. Second of all, vapor barrier should be laid down to prevent the transfer of moisture from concrete to your flooring (if the flooring is affected by moisture).
